You and your family, wherever you live in the United States, probably have been asking yourselves whether Panther Chameleons are good pets to have.
Panther chameleons are one of the most incredibly beautiful and popular chameleons species sought after by many people today. This type of chameleon does make for a good pet, especially to admire in your living room, or simply just letting it perch on your hand or arm. While the word "pet" is often perceived as something you can hold and give affection to, the majority of these reptiles prefer to be left alone, lol. Each panther has their own personality. Some like to be held, and some do not. Some do not like being held when young, but enjoy it as they are older. Some are mean when young, and then may turn gentle as they get older. And then there are those male and female panthers who will come to the front of the cage to greet you every time you are near it's cage and want to be taken out or held.
It's normal to also ask, "does a panther chameleon bite?" Many have that fear, before they make the dive in and purchase a panther chameleon. This is a valid question to ask.
Panther chameleons do have teeth. Some owners, ( I only have heard of one breeder, in all of my years breeding chameleons, who said that he accidentally got bit from a panther chameleon, and yes, it did hurt. The panther mistakenly was going for an insect and the handler's finger was accidentally in the way.
If you were to scare a panther chameleon, he or she, would most likely retreat and hide under a branch, leaves, or try to run away. Some do run fast so you have to be careful that they do not fall to the floor. Stay low when holding chameleons so that their drop is not to far down. The younger the panther chameleon, the faster they usually run, too. The older a panther gets- the more accustomed they are to life and will tend not to run away.
If you are trying to catch one that is aggressive, you can place a stick in front and below it and it will climb onto it. They always climb upwards for safety. Some owners can wear a pot holder/oven mitt when dealing with a chameleon that tends to be feisty- but again it is very rare to have an aggressive panther chameleon.
It's also known amongst panther chameleon breeders that these chameleons do not like getting their pictures taken. They hate the phone camera and will lean away from and hide from the camera that is pointed at them. Getting good photo shots of panther chameleons is an art in itself!

Speaking of the beautiful colors of panther chameleons- it's amazing how much they can change colors. These color changes are based on emotions, not by their surroundings, as some would say, although they can camouflage themselves extremely well by blending win with their branches and leaves. We, at Colorlicious Chameleons have pictures of the chameleon's sire, and often, the grandparent's photo as well. These images would give you a clear glimpse of what the chameleon may look like in its later stages. This is, however, not guaranteed, considering that panther chameleons can have so many color changes throughout his lifetime. One unique Ambilobe panther chameleon we bred, named "Spirit" had the unique change from deep yellow body blue bar to deep red body, and then back to Yellow body with heavy Teal bars! You can see some pictures of "Spirit" below and here.
